Sponsoring WPwatercooler and Dev Branch: What That Includes

But first, let’s talk about some history of why we didn’t take ads before.
The Pre-Sponsored Days
For the past seven years, I’ve had many companies and small business owners ask if they could sponsor WPwatercooler’s shows. For me, the technology wasn’t in the right place to do sponsorships the way I felt would be beneficial for the advertiser.
It seems weird that I’d say “no” to money; honestly, I wanted to make sure that the advertiser was a good fit for our audience. It needed to ensure I could show their advertisement well.
As you may already know, WPwatercooler Network consists of two main shows – WPwatercooler and Dev Branch both recorded weekly and made available as videos on our YouTube channel and as audio podcasts available where all podcasts can be found.
You see, both of these shows are not only passion projects for myself and my co-hosts but are also a way for us to directly communicate with our community. Our listeners trust our opinions, our hot takes, and our experience in this field of website creation. All of my co-hosts have well over seven years’ of experience in this field and many of them work for or run successful companies and take the time out each week to share their knowledge with our listeners and viewers.
What Needed to be Right with the Adverts?
For starters, I wanted to make sure that in both the audio and video space I could show sponsor ads in graphic form. Radio ads have been around forever and its just spoken words and that’s it. Most are complicated ways of getting to the ad (mainly to pay the radio station so they can get credit) but for us, I wanted it to be simple.
On WPwatercooler and WPblab we show graphics on the screen of the ad we’re presenting while we’re live streaming. This gives people a visual cue as to who we’re talking about and what can be done. Most of the time, the folks on the show tend to point at the ad, it’s fun and its’ a way to show everyone we care. We include links to the advertiser in our show notes on YouTube, Facebook, and on our website.
As for the audio podcast, we provide enhanced podcasts where graphics are synced up with the audio. Podcast listeners click on the ad that takes them to the advertiser’s website. We also show the ads on the screen so they can see it and include a link that takes them to the product page on the advertiser’s website. (The image below is from the Overcast podcast player.)
We know that links are important to our advertisers. We live in the future where we don’t just say the website we can also provide links to it. On our website wpwatercooler.com, we provide links to the advertisers on the show as well as links in our show notes which are available everywhere the episode is posted.
This is where podcasts and YouTube are much like a radio program, we read our advertisements live on the air for everyone to hear. Our advertisers provide us with 2 sentences of copy for us to read and we say the URL of their website.
